New Delhi, Delhi, India

A political storm has erupted after Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien alleged a confrontational and abrupt interaction with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during a meeting in the national capital.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, O’Brien claimed that a delegation of opposition leaders met the Election Commission to raise concerns over the transfer of officials ahead of elections, but the interaction ended within minutes. “The meeting started at 10:02 AM and ended at 10:07 AM… he told us ‘get lost’ within 7 minutes,” he alleged.

According to O’Brien, the delegation questioned the Commission on how free and fair elections would be ensured amid ongoing administrative changes. “When we told him that you are transferring officials, and how you would want to conduct a free and fair election… then he said, leave from here,” he said, describing the exchange as shocking.

He further termed the incident a serious matter concerning democratic institutions. “What I saw today is a shame,” O’Brien remarked, adding that such conduct raises concerns about the functioning and transparency of the Election Commission.

In a direct challenge to the poll body, the TMC MP demanded public disclosure of the meeting proceedings. “I challenge the Election Commissioner to release the video or audio of what happened today,” he said, calling for accountability and transparency.

O’Brien also revealed that the issue is set to escalate politically, with several opposition parties planning a joint response. He stated that like-minded anti-BJP parties will hold a press conference later in the day, indicating a coordinated stand on the matter.

Additionally, he referred to ongoing tensions surrounding the Chief Election Commissioner, noting that one of the delegation members pointed out that notices regarding his removal have been raised in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, further intensifying the political backdrop of the meeting.

The Election Commission has not yet publicly responded to the allegations. However, the controversy adds to the growing political friction between opposition parties and constitutional institutions ahead of key electoral contests.

The episode highlights increasing tensions over electoral processes in India, with opposition leaders demanding greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission.
